I’ve been meaning to blog about this for a while, and this will probably be the first post of several about this… Right, I should probably explain what I’m talking about first. I have started redecorating tea tins, and I’m having a lot of fun with it.
The first tin I did was because it was the night before Mother’s Day, and I hadn’t gotten my mother anything, so what to do? I did, however, have a bunch of empty Republic of Tea tins, and a packet of assorted handmade paper scraps from Japan in different sizes, colors, and textures. Voila! A present! (With a note inside promising to fill it with tea, too.) Here’s how it turned out:
I was pretty pleased with it. The pink base paper has a texture to it that made it harden around the tin nicely once the glue dried, and it provided a very nice background for the pink and purple striped rice paper. I love the translucent rice paper with the flower petal pattern, too. I still have some of that left, and I haven’t decided on another collage setting that’s good enough for it again.
My mom seems to like it, too, which was, of course, the point. But it got me started on making a whole bunch, so more tea tin blogging soon!
What kind of glue do you use, and how do you apply it? Is it like a glue wash or just enough to hold it together?
I did a wash of watered down Elmer’s, which I hear from the woman at the Japanese paper store is just as good as the far more expensive glue she sells. So, sort of like papier mache, except not quite as soaked.
