Temari Class: Maritime Stars
March 4, 2008 by Dana
I spent pretty much all day Saturday at a temari class. I have been delinquent in explaining this new hobby of mine on my blog, so first, some background. Last fall, my mom and I went to a demonstration and talk by the author of a new book our local bookstore was promoting, Japanese Temari: A Colorful Spin on an Ancient Craft by Barbara B. Suess. The demonstration was very interesting, and we bought the book. (See her excellent website for lots more temari info.)
Barb, it turns out, is a Raleigh local as well, and she was going to be teaching beginner’s classes at a nearby embroidery store, The French Knot. I signed up, did the all-day class, and learned three basic patterns right away. It was fantastically fun. I signed up for her email list at the end of that class, and when I got the email about her doing pilot classes in preparation for her Embroidery Guild of America seminar later this year, I jumped at the chance. The seminar is going to be a two-day affair at their National Convention, so she broke the pilot class into two separate Saturdays, one for each design she’ll teach in the seminar.
This past Saturday’s design was Maritime Stars. Here’s a link to what it is supposed to look like finished: Maritime Stars.
Here are some pictures showing the different stages and how far I’ve gotten so far.
First, the stars:
Next, the beginning of one of the hexagon swirls:
Now, a finished swirl:
The guidelines actually get removed for this one, and I was going to take a picture showing that effect with more swirls finished, but it’s raining, and my indoor picture turned out too blurred, so I’ll have to wait for another sunny day. I’ll probably be completely finished with it by that point, so really, just go back to the top and look at Barb’s official picture.
Another exciting thing about this class is that learning how to do the hexagon swirls between the stars taught us everything we’ll need to know to do the awesome Swirl ball. That is definitely going to be my next project.
The next class is in two weeks. We’ll learn the Kiku Sampler then. (I can’t find any pictures on her website, so you’ll just have to wait and see.)
